Juices

juicemay 2015 - 3

First of all, if you are interested in juicing, I highly recommend the health documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead by Joe Cross. It depicts his journey on his 60-day juice cleanse. It is available on Netflix.

Every so often Dave and I will embark on a 3 day or more juice cleanse to rid our bodies of toxins so we can have a fresh start! I will even make fresh juices to drink just in general! A little advice on embarking on a juice cleanse: start small. It is not easy at first, especially if you have been eating loads of processed and fast foods. Before starting, I would consciously and actively eat a very healthy diet for at least a week. If you don’t give your body a heads up that something major is about to happen, it will shock you. The first juice cleanse my husband and I did, did not last very long. We cut out all foods and coffee cold turkey. We had not taken the steps to let our bodies know something was about to happen. The coffee was the big problem. We were so used to drinking 2-3 cups of coffee each morning. Now we were having zero. The headaches were awful, thus leading to us not completing our first couples juicing challenge.

Once you take the necessary steps to prepare your  body for a juice cleanse, the cleanse is great! It is so much fun to get creative with the juice blends! After the cleanse is over, you will feel great and have more energy than you are probably used to having.

I have started giving Mary Harper (our daughter) a fresh apple juice or orange juice. This allows me to know exactly what she is drinking! None of those processed, fake, high-fructose corn syrup “fruit” juices for her!

Anyway, below you will find some of my favorite juice recipes! Happy Juicing!

Juice Tips:

  • Add apples to any juice to cut the bitterness of some veggies!
  • Add a lemon or lime to each juice to keep the freshness of the produce! This tip is great if you make your juices ahead of time like I do. I make all the juices I plan to drink throughout the day in the morning. Saves time!
  • Add chia seeds to any juice to give yourself that extra boost of omega-3, fiber, and protein! I add the black organic seeds to mine. Be warned, the longer they sit in liquid, the more gelatinous they become. The texture takes some getting used to.
  • Add cacao nibs or cacao powder to any smoothie or juice blend to give your drink a chocolaty divine taste!
